On Martin Luther King Day, we visited Half Moon Bay, California and we made a stop on the famous restaurant; Sam’s Chowder House, best decision of the day.
Sam’s Chowder House is a classic Oceanside icon seafood house, that is well known for its clam chowder, lobster rolls and a beautiful patio dining (perfect for summers) with stunning views to the Pacific Ocean. The rustic aged interior matches its location.
On 2007 was named by NBC’s Today Show as “American Top Five Sandwiches” because their Lobster Rolls.
We arrived around 2:30 pm and Surprise!! the waiting time was just 30 minutes looking on the small and cozy gift shop, usually during peak season the waiting time is 1 hour or more for walk ins. You can choose to seat outside on the patio with propane heaters by tables to keep you warm, but we decided to seat inside. They have a nice bar with a wonderful selection of wines and beers with big screens that help to keep lonely visitors entertained. Our server was very kind and experienced, she moved quickly while taking care of many customers at the same time. The variety of selections on the menu are numerous and appease any palette. And the plates that the servers were taking to the tables around us looked amazing.
We ordered a New England Clam Chowder, where the potato claim ration is about 50/50, with big clam chunks and a flavorful Lobster Ceviche in a tortilla shell with pineapple and passion fruit vinaigrette as appetizers and we LOVED them. As our main plates my husband ordered a Pacific Swordfish with red quinoa, kale, roasted pear, and golden raisins salad. I ordered a Fried Seafood Combination (prawns, crab cake, calamari and pollock). Food was delicious and filling.
The highlight of our dinner (beside the good food and a gorgeous sunset) was that on my way out the restaurant I heard the Manager on duty congratulating the personnel on the restaurant entrance for their performance, he thanked each of one of the employees with the most powerful words that a boss could say to his/her employees: GOOD JOB & THANK YOU! I just looked at him and said: Good job to you as well!!
I’d recommend this place if you are craving seafood, Sam’s is a coastal tradition with many offerings beyond just their chowder. Pick a window seat and a nice evening to watch the sunset. Make a reservation and arrive early to enjoy a walk on the beach.
